This might sound contradictory but it should be recognized by all that, your body is not your body.
YOUR BODY IS NOT YOUR BODY
1 Corinthians 6:19 Ye are not your own
If someone tries to hurt himself the authorities will intervene. Why? When we say, “It is my body and I can do whatever I want with it,” is this true?
Body
According to the scripture, our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16 6:19). Our bodies are the members of Christ and were created for a special purpose (Ephesians 2:10 1 Corinthians 6:13 15). Paul develops this point by comparing the body to the church (1 Corinthians 12:15-17 21). There is a role for the eyes, the ears, the lips, the hands, and the feet.
Bought
We cannot simply do as we please because we were purchased by Jesus (1 Corinthians 6:19). We were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Jesus (Acts 20:28 Galatians 3:13 1 Peter 1:18 19). As slaves, we cannot go beyond the master’s will (Philemon 1:18). To do so invites the wrath of God (1 Corinthians 3:17).
Belong
Paul makes it clear that we are not our own (1 Corinthians 6:19). He states that we belong to God (1 Corinthians 6:20). Based on history, the concept of being owned by another is repulsive, however, I like the idea that my wife and children belong to me and not another (Ephesians 5:22 25 6:4 1 Corinthians 7:4). I have a responsibility to my family (1 Timothy 5:8).
Behave
Because we belong to God we ought to glorify him with our body (1 Corinthians 6:20). This means that we should be careful what we mutter with our mouths (Isaiah 59:3 Proverbs 6:17 Romans 3:13 14). Health professionals warn about lifestyle choices regarding food, drugs, piercings, tattoos, and surgeries. Whatever we do should be done to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).
Sanctify them with thy word, Thy word is truth. Very good article.
