TWO, NOT THREE
You may have heard the saying, two is company, but three is a crowd. This holds true, especially concerning marriage.
TWO, NOT THREE
Matthew 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh
There is not much difference between the numbers two and three (Matthew 18:16 20), but there is a significant difference in marriage.
Two
From the beginning, God intended that marriage involves two people, a male and a female. God said the two, not three, shall become one flesh (Matthew 19:4-6). Malachi explains that God witnesses the marriage vow between a man and his wife. Same-sex marriage was not in consideration because the couple would produce a godly seed (Malachi 2:14-15).
Together
A man and his wife are joined together by God in holy matrimony (Matthew 19:6). They are companions for life based on the covenant they make (Malachi 2:14). The bible provides a good example of marriage in the life of Aquilla and Priscilla who remained together in persecution. They shared their home with Paul, traveled together, and worked as a team in the church (Acts 18:1-3 18 26).
Three
Problems are sure to arise when there is a third person involved in the marriage. Sarah thought that it would help to have Hagar in her marriage but she was wrong (Genesis 16:1-6). David interfered with Uriah and Bathsheba just as the Philistines did with Samson and his wife (2 Samuel 11:1-15 Judges 14:15-18). Thankfully Joseph refused to mess with the Potiphars (Genesis 39:6-13).
Trouble
Hence Jesus warned, What God has joined together, let no man put asunder (Matthew 19:6 Malachi 2:16). Unfortunately, many marriages are destroyed through adultery and fornication (Matthew 19:1-12 John 8:3-5). Couples should not allow preachers, parents, or others to control their lives (Colossians 2:16). If there is going to be a third person in the marriage, let it be Jesus Malachi 2:14-16 John 2:1-5.
